Natural Approaches to Managing ADHD: A Mother’s Journey

Navigating the challenges of Hyperactive Attention Deficit Disorder (ADHD) in children is a topic that resonates deeply with me. I’ve often shared insights and strategies to support these children in leading joyful and fulfilling lives. It’s incredibly rewarding when readers reach out to share their success stories after applying these tips with their ADHD children.

One such story is that of Claire, a mother whose son has ADD/ADHD. She discovered my blog and began implementing some of the suggested techniques for managing ADHD. Remarkably, within a month, she saw a significant positive change in her son’s behavior and overall happiness.

Feeling encouraged by these improvements, Claire reached out to share her experience and progress. She graciously agreed to let me share her journey with other parents facing similar challenges. Here’s a glimpse into our correspondence, which I hope will inspire and offer hope to parents considering natural methods before resorting to medication.

Claire’s Initial Message

Dear Ronit,

Your article on dietary approaches for ADHD children was a revelation to me. My son, who has been struggling with ADHD symptoms for eight years and on medication for over four, showed no significant improvement. Your blog made me realize that medication alone might not be the answer.

The daily struggles with school, reading difficulties, and morning routines have been a constant battle for both him and us. I was surprised to learn about the potential impact of diet on ADHD, as this was never mentioned by any of our consultants.

I’m committed to trying out the dietary plan you suggested and will keep you updated on our progress. Thank you for shedding light on this approach. I now feel empowered to take a more active role in supporting my son.

Hi Claire,

It’s truly heartening to hear about your son and your proactive approach to managing his ADHD. It’s important to remember that every child is unique, and much of their progress hinges on the perspective and actions of their parents.

As someone who has personally experienced the downsides of medication, I understand your concerns. Medications can have significant effects on memory and cognitive functions, and they should be considered a last resort for severe cases.

The power of diet in managing ADHD symptoms cannot be overstated. Switching to natural, raw foods and eliminating sugar, artificial colors, MSG, and additives can bring about remarkable changes. Often, you might start seeing positive changes in as little as three weeks.

Encouraging your son to engage in cooking, perhaps by reading and following recipes, can be a great way to stimulate his interest in a practical and enjoyable way. Remember, not every child needs to excel in traditional academic subjects like math and English. It’s possible that the negative experiences associated with schooling have made him apprehensive about learning in general.

Regarding his age, could you share how old he is? This information might help in suggesting more tailored strategies.

The coffee trick you mentioned is intriguing. How has it been working out for him? Another approach you might consider is the dark chocolate trick. Opt for chocolate with a high cocoa content (above 75%) and limit it to a small amount (1-3 pieces) daily, preferably not in the evening.

Additionally, B complex vitamins and Rescue Remedy drops (from Bach Flowers) can be incredibly beneficial. Many of my clients have seen positive results with these natural supplements. While I don’t endorse any specific brands, consulting with your doctor or pharmacist for the right B complex supplement is advisable.

I often wish for a world where pharmaceutical companies aren’t as dominant, but that might be wishful thinking for now. The key is to find a balance and what works best for your child.

Keep up the great work, and I look forward to hearing more about your son’s progress.

Hi Claire,

Thank you for reaching out again, and happy birthday to your son! It’s heartening to hear about the progress, even if it’s been a bit of a rollercoaster. Navigating dietary changes, especially with children, can indeed be challenging, but it sounds like you’re making headway.

The fluctuation in his behavior is not uncommon when adjusting to a new diet. It’s similar to how people experience varied results when they start a new diet for weight loss. The initial changes can be dramatic, but then the body adjusts, and progress can seem slower. Keep experimenting with different healthy foods and approaches. It’s great that he loves bananas – they’re a fantastic base for nutritious smoothies. You could try adding natural sweeteners like stevia, Xylitol, or Monk Fruit to give him that sweet taste without the negative effects of sugar.

Regarding his clinginess and dependence, it’s understandable given his age and the challenges he’s facing. Gradually introducing him to small decision-making opportunities can help boost his confidence and independence. It’s a process, so patience and encouragement are key.

It’s concerning to hear he’s still at a kindergarten level at 8 years old. Sometimes, medication can cloud a child’s ability to process and retain information, which might be contributing to his academic challenges. Have you noticed any particular patterns or changes in his learning abilities when he’s on or off medication?

As for the Rescue Remedy, it’s a homeopathic solution made from flower essences and is generally considered safe for children. However, it’s always wise to double-check with a pharmacist or a natural therapist for peace of mind.

You’re doing an incredible job not giving up on him. Remember, every child’s journey is unique, and sometimes it takes a bit of trial and error to find what works best. Keep exploring and stay hopeful. There’s always a solution out there; sometimes it just takes a bit of time to discover it.

Hi Ronit,

I can’t express how grateful I am for your guidance and support. Storm, my son, has undergone such a remarkable transformation, and it’s all thanks to the advice you shared with us.

When we started incorporating dark chocolate (70/85%) into his diet, the change was almost immediate. He became noticeably calmer, especially in the evenings. Before, he was restless, constantly moving his fingers and unable to sit still. But now, there’s a significant difference, and everyone around us noticed it from the second day.

Schooling here in Bahrain has been a challenge, particularly for children with special needs like Storm. The special school he attended didn’t have trained teachers for his needs, and the classes were a mix of children with various disabilities. Feeling he was struggling and not getting the right support, I decided to try one-on-one tutoring, and it’s been a game-changer. He was getting lost in the larger classroom setting, but now, with individual attention, he’s thriving.

Your banana smoothie tip was a hit! Storm loves it and thinks of it as a treat, like ice cream. And the most significant step we’ve taken, thanks to your advice, is stopping all his medication. He’s doing fine without it, and we haven’t seen the usual withdrawal symptoms.

I’m amazed at how well he’s responding to the diet changes. We’ve completely stopped the meds, and it’s like he’s a different child – happier, more focused, and genuinely joyful. It’s such a relief to see him free from the drugs that clouded his mind and hindered his progress.

The rescue remedy has been helpful too, though we’ve only needed it a few times. Now, we have more good days than bad, and Storm’s happiness is palpable. It brings tears to my eyes, thinking of how far he’s come from the days when he was subdued and disconnected due to the medication.

His tutor has been fantastic, working with him for four hours daily. Storm’s concentration and focus have improved so much that he’s now enjoying reading, something he struggled with before. His tutor believes he’ll catch up to his year level in just six months!

I wanted to share this update with you and express my deepest gratitude. Your advice has not only changed Storm’s life but has also brought so much joy and hope to our family. Thank you, Ronit, for sharing your knowledge and helping families like ours.
